Mandla Hlatshwayo, widely known by his stage name DJ Mandla, was a prominent South African entertainer whose career spanned acting, radio, and music production. Born in Soweto in 1976, he first gained national recognition in 1999 as a lead actor on the popular SABC1 soap opera 'Generations,' where he played the character Siphiwe Phosa for seven years. His natural screen presence made him one of the most recognizable faces in South African television.
Beyond acting, Mandla successfully transitioned into the music industry as a house music DJ and producer. He became a staple at Jozi FM, where he shared his passion for deep house with the local community. In 2006, he released the influential compilation “Jozi Knights Volume 1,” under the Soul Candi label, which featured standout tracks and established his reputation as a skilled curator of the South African house sound.
Tragically, Mandla’s life ended in 2017 while he was performing a final act of heroism. He was fatally shot at a Soweto pub while attempting to protect two women from an armed robbery. He is remembered today as a selfless hero whose artistic contributions left an indelible mark on South African culture.
